the Baja California Sur peninsula casts a spell that is hard to resist. For nature lovers,
it offers a wealth of wonders: snorkelling, diving, hiking, fishing, whale watching, or
simply taking in the shimmering coastline. Majestic cacti tower above rugged mountain ranges,
while hot desert landscapes give way to azure bays. Scattered in between are picturesque
villages steeped in colonial charm, ancient missions and centuries-old rock art.
Here, in a land where grey whales return each winter to give birth to their calves,
you will discover not only the breathtaking diversity of nature, but also the soul
of a region that has preserved its authenticity and warm hospitality.
On this 8-day self-drive journey, you explore Baja California Sur entirely at your own pace.
Your adventure begins in charming San José del Cabo, where you can wander through gallery-lined
streets before venturing into landscapes that will leave you in awe.
Every road, coastline and canyon tells a different story.

please and linger wherever your heart tells you to stay. Each stage becomes
a personal chapter in your own Baja California adventure.
¡Bienvenido! After landing at San José del Cabo Airport, pick up your rental car
and make your way at your own pace to your first accommodation. The afternoon is
all about settling in and soaking up the atmosphere. The historic town centre,
with its cobbled streets, colourful galleries and cosy cafés, combines colonial
charm with a laid-back creative spirit. In the evening, savour the flavours of
Mexican cuisine – whether ceviche, mole or tacos al pastor – as your journey
begins with a taste of the sea and the vibrant spirit of Mexico.

Today your journey of discovery through the southern half of the peninsula begins.
Your destination is La Paz, beautifully situated on the shores of the tranquil
Sea of Cortez. But there are plenty of fascinating stops along the way.
Perhaps you’ll take a detour into the Sierra de la Laguna, where a hidden
waterfall offers a refreshing break, or visit a local ranch for a traditional
lunch beneath the palm trees. Alternatively, follow the historic Ruta de la Plata,
passing abandoned chimneys and pioneer buildings in the former mining town of El Triunfo.
At the Cactus Reserve, take in the spectacular scenery before sampling a rather
unusual local treat: homemade cactus ice cream.
In the evening, take a stroll along La Paz’s Malecón, where dolphins sparkle
in the distance, locals and visitors enjoy a leisurely walk, and the sea
glows golden-red in the evening light.

Today is all about the Sea of Cortez, famously described by Jacques Cousteau as the
“Aquarium of the World”. Between November and April, you have the unique opportunity
to swim alongside whale sharks – gentle giants that can grow up to 14 metres long yet are completely peaceful.
All year round, a boat trip to Isla EspĂritu Santo is well worth it. Picnic on
pristine white-sand beaches, snorkel with sea lions and perhaps spot dolphins along the way.
Or discover the long-standing pearl culture of La Paz, combining your visit with a
trip to the Pacific’s largest coral conservation project.
Prefer to take it easy? Relax at the idyllic Balandra Bay or lively Playa Tecolote.
A visit to one of the local museums, such as the Whale Museum, or a stroll
through the market provides the perfect finishing touch to your day.

Today’s route takes you through the spectacular Sierra de la Giganta, a rugged
mountain range where dramatic canyons give way to unexpected oases. Vast desert
landscapes alternate with sweeping panoramic views and towering cacti.
If you are travelling between mid-January and late March, consider a detour to
Magdalena Bay, one of the world’s most important destinations for grey whale
watching, where mothers return with their calves. It is a deeply moving
encounter with these magnificent animals.
Alternatively, embark on an eco-friendly boat trip through mangroves,
sand dunes and tranquil lagoons, offering an intimate glimpse into the region’s fragile ecosystem.
By late afternoon, you arrive in Loreto, the oldest European settlement on
the Baja California peninsula. Here, colonial history, a welcoming MalecĂłn
and a slower, almost poetic pace of life await you – the perfect place to unwind and feel at home.

Today is all about you – and Loreto. One of the highlights is a boat trip to Isla Coronado,
a natural paradise in the UNESCO-protected Loreto Bay National Marine Park.
Snorkel alongside sea lions, walk across volcanic sands and relax on pristine
white beaches, accompanied by blue-footed boobies and pelicans.
Alternatively, head into the mountains to Mission San Javier, hidden away in
the Sierra de la Giganta. Ancient olive trees, a beautiful stone church and
a taste of local fruit wine await you in this remote setting, where Jesuit
missionaries once carried their faith through the mountains.
Another option is a scenic drive along the spectacular BahĂa ConcepciĂłn,
stopping at secluded beaches such as Playa El RequesĂłn or Playa Coyote,
where turquoise waters invite you to linger.
In the charming town of Mulegé, discover traces of its colonial past –
from Mission Santa RosalĂa and the old prison to a peaceful palm-lined stroll.
For a touch of adventure, venture along the off-road trails to Cueva de la
Serpiente, home to fascinating prehistoric rock paintings.

Today you head towards Magdalena Bay, travelling through the spectacular gorges
of the Sierra de la Giganta. The road winds its way through rugged rock formations,
towering cacti and vast, peaceful landscapes – a stage for nature at its most powerful.
In the afternoon, you reach sleepy Puerto San Carlos, a small fishing town
that seems barely larger than its harbour. Life moves at a slower pace here –
the breeze carries the scent of sardines, while pelicans perch on the hulls of fishing boats.
And then there is Magdalena Bay at sunset – glowing red, tranquil and seemingly endless.
A local favourite is Sunset Restaurant, where the seafood is as fresh as the sunset is spectacular.

Your journey takes you to the Pacific coast and Todos Santos, an artists’
town with a soul of its own. Wander among art galleries, historic missions

From September to March, you can take part in the release of sea turtles
into the wild – a moving experience and a wonderful opportunity to support local conservation efforts.

Your final leg takes you back to San José del Cabo, but not before one
last immersion in the magic of this extraordinary peninsula. In Cabo San Lucas,

Playa del Amor. Sea lions greet you around the harbour, while the ocean shimmers like liquid glass.
If you wish, visit a traditional glassblowing workshop, sample fine tequila,
or stroll through the historic centre of San José del Cabo, browsing for
souvenirs and soaking up your final impressions of Baja.
Then it is time to say goodbye – with a heart full of sunsets,
